Caravans of Development (CoD) is a Somali-led non-profit advancing environmental protection, climate-change adaptation and community-led development across Somalia and the wider region.
CoD is a non-profit registered and operating in Somalia, dedicated entirely to environmental protection, climate-change adaptation and sustainable community development.
Established by a group of Somali professionals, CoD responds directly to the escalating climate crises in the Horn of Africa — recognizing that sustainable development requires deep integration of local cultural context, technical expertise and community-led environmental governance.
Three interlinked areas of expertise anchor every CoD engagement — from the field to national policy.
Our core focus. CoD is a leader in environmental defense and climate resilience in Somalia — implementing community-led interventions targeting desertification control, rangeland management, water-resource conservation and climate-adaptation strategies, hand-in-hand with ministries, cooperatives and rural communities.
We design grassroots and national-level environmental policies, regulatory frameworks and operational guidelines — including comprehensive institutional capacity assessments for the Ministry of Environment in Puntland, acknowledged by partners such as the World Bank and UNDP.
We deliver rigorous, evidence-based research that guarantees donor accountability and transparency, using cutting-edge mobile data systems (Kobo Toolbox) and advanced methodologies to evaluate environmental, food-security and livelihood programs across remote and complex environments.
As a dedicated environmental and sustainable-development NGO, our scope of work spans ten specialized areas.
Community-led interventions in desertification control, rangeland management, water conservation and ecological resilience.
Assessing and strengthening ministries, cooperatives and local institutions to deliver and sustain results.
Robust MEAL systems and independent third-party verification that guarantee donor accountability and transparency.
Resolving resource-based disputes by applying Somali traditional systems alongside modern mediation.
Designing grassroots and national environmental policies, regulatory frameworks and operational guidelines.
